Reposting for the daytime crew and giving it a new title in hopes someone will tell us about the cars in that y uuuuge yard, or that Buick for sale . I figure there have to be some interesting vehicles worth identifying.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
For those who missed it, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . No trick or treaters here! (But I did buy a bag o’ Nerds, just in case, not that there will be any left by Saturday night.)
Non-stop rain for 14-18 hours left my critters leafy
It’s not often, in fact almost vanishingly rare, that I enable 4wd before tackling a public road.
Today, however, thanks to the remnants (I assume) of Hurricane Zeta which drenched the state, and thanks to once again finding a road neither the state nor the county particularly care about (but which local farmers clearly use heavily), I found myself staring down a fabulous soupy mess.
I’m no fan of mudding, but c’mon, a road like this doesn’t show up every day.
Further down you’ll see a field of dreams, so don’t miss it. And don’t skip the captions.
This is the head of Vandalia Road (more below). I should bring a large format camera to this spot next year for fall foliage and die a happy man.
Vandalia Road, heading into one of my favorite valleys in Indiana
Yes, still Vandalia Road
Vandalia Road is unusual for having not one but *two* stream crossings (same stream). Neither crossing is, obviously, likely to sweep even a Smart car away
I thought I had video of this protective bull trotting alongside, but sadly somehow I accidentally cut it off and I’m so unhappy with myself
The sun had been entirely hidden for a few days, only to magically appear just at sunset woo
These three photos are all of the same yard. Also parked in front of the house was a classic Beetle
Two tractors. Not sure which one is faster.
Thanks for once again indulging my need to share rural Indiana with y’all

Your rural Indiana is much cooler than my rural Indiana. Up north it's just flat.

Yeah, there’s a reason I almost always head south instead of north (I live in Indy).
I did take a trip north this summer, but most of my photos were of cars, not roads, because while I did find a curvy road or two, meh.
https://oppositelock.kinja.com/northern-indiana-miscellany-1844508685
There’s one gem of a state highway up north, but I can’t remember now where I found it, it’s been 10 years.
And of course Jasper-Pulaski is pretty cool, and Lake Michigan.

So much natural beauty. That muddy road almost seems too perfect not to give it a try.

Definitely soupy. Not exactly scenic per se...

I wouldn't exactly want to tackle it in a car not suited to mudding though. It's that last photo that makes me want to get out and drive. I love hilly winding one laners like that.

Nice looking roads as always. Do you use anything to keep track of these new road you find for future reference or jus commit them to memory?
I like the 60 Buick in the picture before the bull. In the last picture from the field the blue panel truck looks like a 1960 Dodge, and the yellow van behind it is a Dodge too but not sure of the year. In fact while I can’t positively ID most of them; the ones that look familiar mostly seem to be Mopars.

Nice scenery! I especially like the inviting road in that last shot, meandering off into the distance.

“Yesterday’s News” is a terrible name for a newspaper. Presumably why they failed and the van ended up here.
Is that a Chevy Monza coupe on the flatbed on the right rear of the yard?
I also like the bright blue Chevy (?) panel van. Red Dodge extended cab behind the van is also pretty interesting and somewhat uncommon. Most of these are too old for me to identify with so little to go off of.

I talked a bit about the apps I use recently: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/interesting-roads-a-hobbyist-s-guide-1845388144
I use Gaia GPS to record tracks & create routes, but I really need it to be more useful when it comes time to look at my maps. Too cluttered.
Every time I go out I think about how I’d like to have some custom software and a dedicated GPS device in my Jeep to record my routes and make it easy to record the things I’d like to know in the future, like how hilly/curvy a road is, what the road surface is, etc.

If I had 20 years and my current shop, I could do a lot of damage with a “mostly ‘40s cars” junkyard.

Hauser Road, just found it last night. I really need a new phrase, because I overuse it , but once again, “middle of nowhere”.

I saw that and downloaded a couple, but hadn’t played with them enough to see if you could save routes if you came across a road that wasn’t represented.
I wonder if there’s any software available that’s designed for the off-road and rock crawling community that would do what you want.

Possibly. There are definitely some off-road apps, although I haven’t actually been off-road in years now (sigh) so I haven’t played with them.

That’s your standard Chevy Van from the 70s-80s but usually they are a boring white. Must have been a livery that had the lettering removed. Reminds me of this:

Looks like a late 70's Nova on the flat bed.
The blue panel van is a Dodge, probably early to mid 60's.

I considered the Nova but I didn ’t quite get it.
The Dodge I had no idea. For some reason, the Mopar panel vans don’t seem to have stuck around as much. Not that any panel vans are a common sight. But curiously I rather like the somewhat awkward styling of the front of those Dodge trucks. It’s rather homely but in a good way.

Oooooh, those look so good in teal. But I can’t help but question the approach angle on the ones with a winch compared to the ones without.

These were work trucks, ranch, fore stry, fire service and the like . I’m pretty sure these were never intended to be hardcore off- road toys .

Beautiful pictures! As others have said, the roads meandering off into the trees are great, and pull at me.
Also, fake news from the bridge sign. It’s significantly wider than the road!

I had about 5 more such photos I wanted to share, but decided the post was long enough. Maybe I’ll do an outtakes post sometime.
I have a rule of thumb: I can measure the quality of a day by the number of one lane bridges I cross. Yesterday was a very good day.

The cars in the field/yard appear be almost entirely Mopar products, definitely a theme there.
The 60 Buick is reminiscent of the car in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’.

It was the car driven by the “Brad” character (Judge Reinhold):
There’s a detailed scene where he washes it, he was proud of it.

I’m up here in the Region so Lake Michigan and the National Park is about 5 minutes from me. So it’s not all bad.
Picture from Monday’s foliage drive to SW Michigan.

I agree with Who is the Leader. The coupe looks more like a Vega (or Astre) than a Nova.

Nobody mentioned the ‘56 Dodge (just below the yard cabin) and the AMC Spirit below the Yesterday’s news van so I just had to.

Much bigger and more square than any Vega or Astre. The car appears to be a late model stock car, the fenders have been cut for the racing slicks.

Upon closer inspection you may be correct. The taillight opening fooled me.
